Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Review
After surviving the happenings of last year, Harry is back at Hogwarts to complete his second year where he will face new people, ghosts, and regular schoolwork. For example, he has to deal with the self-absorbed new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Gilderoy Lockhart, and Moaning Myrtle, a ghost who haunts one of the girls' restrooms. The real challenge, though, is the mystery behind quite a few Hogwarts students getting paralyzed, supposedly by a monster that lies within the Chamber of Secrets which can only be opened by Salazar Slytherin's true heir. With accusations flying, can Harry figure out who truly opened the chamber, or will he get expelled when he himself gets accused?
Keep in mind that everyone has their own opinion. This review is only my opinion, and you may have your own, different one. I would take into consideration what I say, but do not make a decision about the book solely based off of this review. Let's begin:
I liked this book even more than the first. Don't get me wrong- the first will always be special because of how amazing it set the whole world up, but the storyline in this one is just really cool. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot of this book, from the main issue, to all of the accusations, to the smaller scenes that help build everything up. It all added to one amazing ending that makes you really excited for the third book because, if it is like this one, it will be fantastic.
I was glad that some characters that did not get much development in the first book did in this one. The main example of this would be Ginny Weasley. Readers got to see a lot more of her in this book, and it made me really interested in her character in the end. We still do not know a ton about her, but I definitely look forward to getting to know her more after this novel.
The new characters were great also. I fell in love with all of them, even the more dark wizard-type ones. Dobby has to be my favorite, though. He is such a cute character, and I admired how selfless he was in his attempts to help Harry. Sure, these attempts may seem a little backwards, but Dobby had the best of intentions, and he punished himself so much that I do not see how anyone could still be mad at him. He has a heart of gold, and I really hope that we get more Dobby time in future books. Rowling did an amazing job creating him.
Some characters were put on a bit of a sideline, so that was a little bit sad. I, for one, love Neville Longbottom for his comic relief, and we did not have nearly enough of him. This was made up for, however, with the new characters and the growth of a couple of older ones.
The magic in this book is even better than the last. I mean, who doesn't love flying cars and a good batch of polyjuice potion? The car was a really fun way of kickstarting the book, and the polyjuice potion was a cool and unique way of allowing Harry and his friends to gather more information in their quest to find out who opened the chamber. Ron's magic was another great form of comic relief, though I did feel a bit bad for him having to deal with what he did.
It was great seeing Hermoine fully involved in the friendship for the entirety of the book. Ron, Hermoine, and Harry all grew as characters, allowing their friendship to also mature. This was enjoyable to watch play out.
Again, the descriptions were very well balanced, and I was able to imagine everything in my head vividly as it happened. This also caused me to have many feelings while reading. For instance, the descriptions of Aragog truly creeped me out, making me feel the same fear that Ron definitely was experiencing.
Truth be told, I could just make this review really short and sweet by saying that everything about this story was fantastic. There is really nothing truly negative to say, in my opinion. If you name something about the book, there will be a 99.9% chance of me saying I loved it. I highly highly recommend this book to all types of readers!
