Wicked King Review

With Cardan now under her control, Jude essentially runs the kingdom of Elfhame. Unused to not having all of the power, Cardan does all he can to make Jude's life miserable. With numerous threats to her clear and closing in, she now has the issue of uncovering a person whom she trusts plan to betray her. As if that is not enough, she also faces the war with herself over her feelings for the wicked new High King.

Keep in mind that everyone has their own opinion. This review is only my opinion, and you may have your own, different one. I would take into consideration what I say, but do not make a decision about the book solely based off of this review. Let's begin:

If you read my review for the first book in this series, you would know how much I loved it. What I am about to say next may sound bad, but I mean it in a good way, and it in no way is meant to reflect negatively on the first book because it is still an amazing read. This book is so good that it makes the first book seem bad. I am not sure how she managed it, but Holly Black outdid herself. It is like she set a super high bar with the first book, and then she completely shattered that one and built a new one so much higher.
I seriously cannot express how much I adored this book. I mean, I actually had numerous physical reactions along with countless mental ones. Not only that, but I needed to know what was going to happen so much after finishing the read that I sacrificed something I hold very dear to me: sleep. That, my friends, is how you know I truly love a book. George R. R. Martin once said "Sleep is good... and books are better." I do believe this; It's even in my bookstagram biography. I will now always think of this series in the rare times I do question how much truth can actually be found in that quote.
Everything I said that was great in my review for the first book is not only great in this book, but a masterpiece. Seriously, all of it- betrayals, characters, magic, descriptions, plot, action, darkness, and literally anything else you can think of.
Cardan is officially my new book boyfriend (sorry Maven). Judge me if you want, but it is true, and I am not ashamed of it. At all. I absolutely love the complexity behind him and how he has so many different sides. If you are a person curious as to why females fall for bad boys, look no further than this book to get your answer. Cardan is the prime example of why. I am a sucker for the slow burn romances and the enemies to lovers trope. This book exceeds my standards in both categories, and I am sure that has something to do with Cardan and Jude being such deep, well-developed characters. That and, of course, the talent Holly Black has for writing.
Everything was very creative and exceeded my already very very high expectations. I cannot recommend this book enough. It is perfect for readers within the YA intended age range and above. This easily made it towards the top of my favorites shelf, and I can certainly see myself going back and rereading this series on a rainy day already.
