Midnight Sun Review
The original Twilight story sparked a loyal fandom. This book brings us back to that original story, but this time from Edward's perspective instead of Bella's. Meeting Bella forced Edward to go to war with himself. Midnight Sun exposes readers to his inner thoughts and some of his past experiences. Edward must ask himself whether he should do as his heart commands or keep Bella safe.
Keep in mind that everyone has their own opinion. This review is only my opinion, and you may have your own, different one. I would take into consideration what I say, but do not make a decision about the book solely based off of this review. Let's begin:
Just in case anyone does not understand, this book is not a new story- it is the original story just from Edward's perspective instead of Bella's. Therefore, the majority of the book is filled with scenes that we already know. However, do not let this scare you off from reading this. There is plenty of stuff that is either brand new or somewhat new. All of the original scenes are embellished with Edward's thoughts. During the times when Edward and Bella are separated, we never knew what Edward was doing. Midnight Sun shows what Edward was doing.
I thought it was really cool getting to see the reasons behind all of Edward's actions. The original book does a good job of explaining, but it does not compare to actually being in Edward's head. I still personally think the way he acts is a bit creepy, but I understand better the intentions and reasoning behind his actions. I enjoyed getting to see what he was doing when he was separated from Bella. These new scenes were perfect for keeping the story fresh.
One of my favorite things about this book was getting more time with the Cullen family. I feel like I got to know them better, especially Emmett, Jasper, and Rosalie. From the time I started the series to the time I finished the fourth book, I wished that I got to know those three a little more. This was most true for Emmett as he did not really get any time to shine where Jasper and Rosalie eventually did. This book changed that, and I really liked that.
My other favorite thing was that Bella was more interesting. I was never as harsh a critic of Bella as others, but I believe she could have been a bit deeper. When looking at her from Edward's point of view, this changes drastically. She has much more personality and is a lot deeper than is let on in the first four books. Edward discusses countless times all of these little quirks she has that hint at a ton of different thoughts and feelings that I never caught on to by myself.
I'd say my biggest criticism is that Edward can be very repetitive. I got a tad bored at times because he kept saying things he had already said seven other times. I do not need to be told how fragile Bella is a million times. That is partly the reason why this book is so much longer than the first one.
Overall, I enjoyed the read, but not as much as I enjoyed the other books. I would recommend giving it a try, but not if you are looking for something brand new. You get a deeper understanding of the characters, but it can be repetitive.
