Instant Karma Review

Prudence is an overachiever who judges the people of the town she lives in negatively very quick. After she hangs out with some friends, she wakes up with the power to cast instant karma on those deserving of it. She makes use of this power happily, punishing anyone even slightly deserving. Quint Erickson, her lab partner who is always late, is the one person who her powers do not work on much to her dismay. Quint has both good looks and a good heart, especially when it comes to marine life. Pru needs extra credit for her biology class, so she finally accepts that she will have to volunteer at the rescue center where Quint works. The longer she works there, the more she learns about the beauty of the ocean and the more confused she gets about the mixed signals Quint is giving off. Her karmic powers will also reveal some lessons to Pru and will hopefully help her grow as a person.

Keep in mind that everyone has their own opinion. This review is only my opinion, and you may have your own, different one. I would take into consideration what I say, but do not make a decision about the book solely based off of this review. Let's begin:

Marissa Meyer is an auto-buy author for me. She was one of the authors that really got me to love reading with her series, The Lunar Chronicles. In fact, I think every book written by her up until this point have been 5-star reads. Sadly, I don't think this one was worth 5 stars, but I did still really enjoy the read!

I liked all of the characters for the most part. I really liked Quint and Ari- they were probably my two favorite characters. Ari was such a fun character and for some reason I was drawn in by her personality. Quint is such a good person and I love how he can be laid back, but also responsible when needed. Basically, I just like all of the layers to his character. If I am being honest, I did not like Prudence a ton in the beginning. I grew into liking her as she changed, but in the beginning, she was just too negative and (as much as she would hate me saying this about her) uptight. I found myself getting a bit annoyed with her. However, like I said before, this did change maybe a quarter of the way through the book, so it wasn't awful. All of the more minor characters were written well.

The plot was pretty good. I felt like it moved at a nice pace and I was never particularly bored. I do wish the karmic powers were explained a bit more. For example, why Prudence got them in the first place. For a bit of the book, I felt almost as if the karmic powers did not have a true place in the book. It appeared to me that it was kind of forced into the book. After reading for a while though and once I finished the book completely, I understood its affect on the novel and why it was significant. The plot had a nice romance. I loved that it was a slow-burn and that there was a lot of banter between Quint and Prudence. With the exception of the powers in the beginning, I actually loved the plot.

I really loved all of the ways the book revolved around marine life. I actually just finished learning about ecotourism in my marine science class, so it was fun to be able to understand and relate to what Prudence and Quint were talking about. I think this topic made for a fun, more unique novel.

Overall, this was a cute, quick, and easy read that I would recommend if you want something more on the light side. It did not have the same effect on me as Meyer's work has in the past, sadly, but it was not super disappointing either. It's really good as a standalone and nice if you want a romance that is just a sweet PG relationship. While it did have a couple of issues in my opinion, it was still worth the read and was really cute.
